Maleonn's photography - alternately playful and edged with the macabre - juxtaposes, with singular artistic power, widespread feelings of dislocation and unease at the pace of change in today's China, on the one hand, and the welcoming of new horizons of self-expression and cultural vitality, on the other. Maleonn was featured in CBC TV's documentary series China Rises ('City of Dreams,' January 29, 2006). Pennisi is one of Europe's leading collagists of the postwar era. Indeed, in the view of Joseph Beuys in 1979 (expressed to press and art critics at the time Beuys was opening his own show at the Guggenheim in New York), Pennisi was at the time 'the greatest collagist in the world.' Pennisi's show, 'Alchemy', at Craig Scott Gallery will have the double purpose of exhibiting work from 1960 to present and presenting a new series of collages called Gli imaginari di Gianni Pennisi (Imaginaries of Gianni Pennisi). Pennisi's 'imaginaries' have been created using Pennisi's singular method that involves a near-magical process of transforming cuttings and tearings from popular magazines into entirely new forms of paper in a unique colour spectrum; he then composes these revitalized remnants into stunningly beautiful symphonies. Pennisi's early training, in the 1950s and early 1960s, occurred under Francisco Mancini and, for two years in Hamburg, Oskar Kokoshka. Amongst Pennisi's many achievements are his solo charity exhibit for UNICEF at the United Nations in New York in 1977 and, in 2003, receipt of Spain's Cartagena Prize 'for having contributed, in Italy and abroad, to cultural development in its multiple aspects.'
95 Berkeley Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 2W3
T: 416-365-3326, info@craigscottgallery.com
www.craigscottgallery.com
Map Zone: 9, Berkeley District

DISTILL
May 2, 2006 - May 14, 2006
Reception: May 4, 2006, 7 - 9 PM
clay by 12 - Group Exhibition
distill is proud to present the 2006 graduating class from the Sheridan College ceramics studio - Charlotte Avery, David Irish, Diane Hamilton, Jane Thelwell, Lauren Blakey, Janine Macdonald, Jess Cooper, Patricia Lawler, Taro Howard, Patrick Yeung, Tara-Lynne Franco and Julia Van Tuinen.
May 16, 2006 - May 28, 2006
blooming - invitational exhibition
'blooming' is an invitational exhibition showing vessels designed to contain flowers - ceramics by Susie Osler, Joan Mcneil, Michelle Mendlowitz, Jordan Mcdonald, Hilary Masemann, Robin Tieu, Lisa Parsons, Dawn Petticrew, Amanda Potter, Max Blankstein, Hannun Lyn, Suzanne Finn and Allison Skinner. This exhibition juxtaposes the stunning photographs of the late Richard Harrington with sculpture and graphics from Arctic Quebec. In the late 1950s, the legendary photographer travelled to Arctic Quebec and documented a culture on the cusp of major change. The narrative works of art in the exhibition parallel the photographs, reflecting the artists'; desire to depict the 'old ways' in the face of swift acculturation. The photographs anchor each sculpture to the past and provide a strong dialogue between the different forms of visual representations.
14 Hazelton Ave., Toronto, ON, M5R 2E2
T: 416-323-1373, F: 416-323-0121
gallery@feheleyfinearts.com
www.feheleyfinearts.com, Tues-Sat 10-5:30
Map Zone: 3, Yorkville

GALLERY ARCTURUS
April 29, 2006 - June 24, 2006
Reception: April 29, 2006, 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM
In Between - Simeon Posen, Pamela Williams, Joachim Oepkes
Simeon Posen - Still Moving, photographs that capture the flow, movement and brilliance of rushing rivers, waterfalls and vast oceans. There are artists who are known for their heads-Chuck Close, Alex Katz, Angus Bungay, Cynthia Karalla or Ann Kipling where a primary source of their research and practice has been the human physiognomy. They are hanging on our walls, a result of the headhunt. This generation of heads came after the tradition of portraiture where egoism and historical record-keeping motivated the use of heads as subject. Headbones, The Drawers presents a portrait attributed to Sir Joshua Reynolds and documents the search for it's authenticity, but this is not a portrait show. The Result of the Headhunt brings forward a selection from artists who have succumbed to the irresistible urge to headhunt, to have a head to hang up, 'a head of one's own' to examine with all of the ramifications of expression, execution, subject, and association that they embody. Featuring 10 works each by Sergio Finamore, Rae Johnson, Harold Klunder, Judith Page, Lorraine Pritchard, Gord Smith and Jenny Wing Yee Tong and single works by Daniel Anhorn, Michaele Jordana Berman, Chuck Close, Daniel David, Andy Graffiti, Cherry Hood, Gertrude Kearns, Kris Knight, Daniel Lee, Tom MacKenzie, Jennifer MacKlemm, Mehrad Meraji, Maurizio Pellegrin, Srdjan Segan, Julie Oakes, Malcom Poynter, Fred Tomaselli, Alphonse Van Woerkom, Charles Yuen and others address the head from their particular perspectives. Headbones, The Drawers manages the storage, exhibition, and sales of drawings and works on paper of approximately one hundred visual artists in a one-year period. Each artist featured provides ten works to the drawers and a small catalog is produced with a written commentary by Julie Oakes. Collectors have access to about one thousand catalogued works in the gallery at any given time.
260 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto ON
T: 416-465-7352, info@headbonesgallery.com
www.headbonesgallery.com
Wed- Sat 12-6

HOLLANDER YORK GALLERY
May 13, 2006 - May 29, 2006
Reception: May 13, 2006, 1 - 5 PM
Sculpture and Painting - Rose-Aimee Belanger & Laura Harris.
Rose-Aimee Belanger: At 83 years of age, Belanger is a celebrated sculptor across Canada and the U.S.A. Long has a compelling series done in stereo, a rare and historic technique of viewing images in 3-D and a stunning series of large-scale panoramic landscapes that engulf theviewer.
133 Avenue Road, Toronto, ON, M5R 2H7
T: 416-924-7296, info@leonardogalleries.com
www.leonardogalleries.com
Mon-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-5, Map Zone: 3, Yorkville
To see AD, click here

LOUISE LIPMAN CONTEMPORARY ART
May 2, 2006 - May 31, 2006
Reception: May 6, 2006, 2 - 4 PM
Nudes/A Fragile Landscape - Stephen Zeifman/Simon Schneiderman.
Zeifman has used a 35mm Leica camera and natural light to create a series of images that are neither ironic nor self-referential. He has made the body a stolid, sculptural presence, a milky white trunk emerging from darkness. In contrast to the secure inhabitants of Zeifman's works are the men and women depicted by Simon Schneiderman. This body of work, focused entirely on landscape, is based on the artist's memories and imagination to evoke a reconfiguration of places that are imbued with emotion, and a collective sense of history. The beautiful, often very large-scale canvases reflect the confident maturity of a seasoned painter. To a large extent, the appeal of the grid is in its inherent neutrality and its formulaic ability to provide a matrix upon which to project a myriad of variations. The horizontal and the vertical can theoretically extend to infinity, as does the grid. Within this framework, space is potentially extended and at the same time, concentrated.
230 Locke Street South, Hamilton, ON, L8P 4B7
T: 905-522-1299, art@transitgallery.ca www.transitgallery.ca, Tues-Sat 10-6
Fri 10-9, Sun 12-4,

COVENT GARDEN FINE ART GALLERY
April 22, 2006 - June 5, 2006
New and Recent Works Group Show. - Works by THE Q.
Featuring the works of 'THE Q' Canada's newest group of renowned artists including Lola Reid Allin, Mary-Lou Ashton, Linda Barber, Albert Breau, Antonia Campbell, Florence Chik-Lau, Jy Chiperzak, Christine Chown, Marsha Gormley, Kent Harfst, Aidan Haley, Ron Hall, Sue Hawley, Linda Labelle, Joan Mackay, Tess Moffat, Dean Munroe and Susan Statham. The opening reception will take place on Friday, June 2, 2006. There are striking similarities in the ways Warhol and Mapplethorpe approached the photographic image. Mapplethorpe / Warhol: Celebrity Portraits is an opportunity to explore the two artists' parallel approaches through a genre, which was central to the work of both - portrait photography. The camera was an essential element in the making of Warhol's silkscreen paintings, and the photograph is well known as the basis for his appropriated Pop Culture images. Nevertheless, the Polaroids in this exhibition, taken with the Big Shot camera in the 70s and 80s, were, as Peter Hay Halpert described 'unlike his other photographs...these reveal Warhol the photographer to a greater degree than we have recognized. These pieces are entirely Andy's. Warhol's Polaroids are a personal statement in a way that none of his other photographs are. They were not constructed at the Factory. Where there is no artistry in the photo-booth pictures (a not undesired aspect), the Polaroids reveal Warhol behind the camera, making choices.' Mapplethorpe, a great admirer of Warhol, also embraced appropriation in his first use of photography. As demonstrated in he exhibition's 1986 portrait of Warhol, he began by appropriating commercially printed imagery, and it was not until the early 1970s that he took his first photographs with a Polaroid camera. Like Warhol, Mapplethorpe turned away from the world in which he grew up and became fascinated by the allure of New York City. Both artists enjoyed celebrity status in an audience beyond the art world, and both manipulated their personas as evidenced by the self-portraits in drag shown by both artists. While Warhol produced documents of celebrity and glamour, Mapplethorpe focused on the aesthetics of the body and his subjects' sexual presence. This exhibition gives us the opportunity to juxtapose the artists' portraits of each other, as well as both artists' images of Grace Jones, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keith Haring, Deborah Harry, Roy Lichtenstein, Francesco Clemente and Truman Capote.
528 West 29th St., New York NY
212.239.1181, info@skny.com
www.skny.com
Tues-Fri 11-6; Sat 10-6

TONY SHAFRAZI GALLERY
  May 5, 2006 - June 30, 2006
Please contact gallery for exhibition information.
544 West 26th Street, New York NY
T: 212-274-9300, info@tonyshafrazigallery.com
www.tonyshafrazigallery.com
Tues-Sat 10-6

For a printable version, click HERE

";

Representing the bustling village on a winter day, these monumental paintings have become iconic images of early-nineteenth-century Brooklyn. This exhibition, featuring Guy's pictures and a selection of related objects from the Museum's collections, explores the way art constructs the identity of a place through the depiction of its physical appearance and its people. In his two Winter Scenes, Guy carefully delineated Brooklyn's busy intersections and distinctive architecture, as well as the diversity of its inhabitants. While this reportorial approach suggests a local focus, the paintings participate in broader artistic trends that distinguished American scenery as a source of aesthetic beauty and national pride. Guy's representation of the Brooklyn community comprises a range of professional, social, and ethnic groups and testifies to a Brooklyn that was marked by diversity then, as it is now.
May 1, 2006 - June 4, 2006
Tiraz: Nine Early Islamic Textiles. This focused installation of works rarely on view includes nine of the Museum\'s most exquisite tiraz textile fragments and an important pictorial Iranian ceramic. Derived from the Persian word for embroidery, the term tiraz refers to a kind of textile originally produced as a gift of honor from the earliest rulers of the Islamic world as well as to the special factories that produced these textiles. Often, tiraz textiles were inscribed with the names, reign dates, and praises of the ruler who ordered their production, and have thus provided scholars with invaluable historical information. The nine textiles on view, mostly from North Africa, are breathtaking in their range of style and decoration, from austere examples with black-on-white embroidered inscriptions to textiles depicting animals and human figures. Included in the installation is a fragment from the earliest datable textile from the Islamic world, containing the name of the Umayyad caliph Marwan II (reigned 744-50).
200 Eastern Parkway, New York NY
T: 718-638-5000, information@brooklynmuseum.org
http://www.brooklynmuseum.org
Wed-Fri 10-5, Sat-Sun 11-6

THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM
May 27, 2006 - September 3, 2006
The 'F' Word - Various Artists
In celebration of the regional marketing initiative, Pittsburgh Roars, The Andy Warhol Museum presents recent work by ten contemporary female artists who have developed unique aesthetic and conceptual strategies to reaffirm the place of women and their voices in visual arts and culture. The artists in this intergenerational group - from women who led the first charge of feminist art in the 1960s and 1970s, to those just emerging on the international scene - each see art as a means to upend and unsettle mainstream ideologies and dominant stereotypes. Some vocalize dissent and others advocate alternatives in relation to expressing individuality, redressing imbalances, encouraging empathy, and broadening definitions. In turn, the work in 'The 'F' Word' challenges and examines the connotations embedded in words such as 'feminism,' 'feminine,' 'female' and other labels often affixed to art made by women. Support for the exhibition comes from the Pittsburgh Roars project and The Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania.
May 27, 2006 - September 3, 2006
The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene, 1974-84 - Various Artists
In the mid-1970s, a distinctive 'downtown attitude' toward life and art took hold in lower Manhattan. Artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers began creating work that was at once populist and subversive, utopian and raw, antic and angry. Influenced by the Beats and New York School artists as well as hippies, Marxists, and anarchists, downtown artists began pushing the limits of traditional artistic categories - visual artists were also writers; writers were developing performance pieces; performers were incorporating videos into their work; and everyone was in a band. Organized by the Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library at New York University and curated by Paper Magazine Senior Editor, Carlo McCormick, 'The Downtown Show' is the first substantial retrospective of these critically important years. The exhibition includes more than 500 paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos and photographs, as well as more than 100 archival items relating to the downtown scene. Featured artists include Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Jim Jarmush, Christian Marclay, Cindy Sherman, Nam June Paik, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer and many others.
117 Sandusky Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
15212-589, 412-237-8300, www.warhol.org
Tues-Sun 10-5

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
May 1, 2006 - May 22, 2006
Without Boundary: Seventeen Ways of Looking. Broida Collection. This exhibition includes more than one hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints selected from Edward R. Broida's recent gift to the Museum of 175 works of art. Dating from the 1960s through the present, works by thirty-eight European and American artists are on view. The Edward R. Broida gift has dramatically enhanced MoMA's current holdings of many artists and has introduced important works by several artists new to the MoMA collection. In the exhibition, monographic galleries focus on artists whose work Broida collected in extraordinary depth, such as Philip Guston, Vija Celmins, Ken Price, and Christopher Wilmarth. Other galleries juxtapose clusters of works by various artists. The exhibition also provides a rare opportunity for the presentation of Rhapsody, Jennifer Bartlett's groundbreaking multi-panel painting of 1976. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue.
May 3, 2006 - September 18, 2006
Since 2000: Printmaking Now. Contemporary printmaking is flourishing, with artists turning to new digital approaches, renewing age-old techniques, and printing on and with alternative materials and tools. Today artists use a myriad of printed formats, from the traditional intimacy of the singular sheet or book, to expansive multipart projects and installations that run floor to ceiling and wall to wall. 'Since 2000: Printmaking Now' demonstrates the vitality of current printmaking by showcasing works created since 2000 and acquired by the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books. The exhibition highlights projects never before seen at the Museum, by young artists new to printmaking as well as by more established figures.
May 10, 2006 - October 2, 2006
'Transforming Chronologies: An Atlas of Drawings, Part Two'. The second installation in a two-part exhibition of drawings from the collection, 'Transforming Chronologies: An Atlas of Drawings, Part Two' features works from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The exhibition continues the exploration of the visual relationships that can exist between artworks by offering a view of modern drawing based exclusively on the visual characteristics of the works themselves. The curatorial premise is that the meaning of a work depends not only on its own internal structure, but also on its position in relation to other works of art, to which it need not be related chronologically. The first installation presented works under the headings of Faces, Movement, and Tectonics; this second installation features the groupings Digital, Figures, and Constructions. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue, to be published by MoMA this summer.
May 1, 2006 - May 15, 2006
Rediscovering Roscoe: The Careers of 'Fatty' Arbuckle. From 1914 to 1921, Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle was a king of silent screen comedy. His character of the fun-loving fat boy was loved all over the world and second only to Charlie Chaplin in box office popularity. He was the first slapstick clown to move from shorts to feature films, but a scandalous accusation (of which he was ultimately found innocent) left him banished from the screen and effectively buried his reputation for the next eighty years. This retrospective covering the complete arc of his career provides an opportunity to not only appreciate Arbuckle as an immensely likeable performer but also to discover his neglected work behind the camera as gag writer and director during his exile, as well as his return to the screen in the sound era. Included are many appearances with Arbuckle's contemporaries, including Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Buster Keaton, Louise Fazenda, Edgar Kennedy, Al St. John, and Eddie Cantor. This award commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and work and honors his wife, Coretta Scott King, for her 'courage and determination in continuing the work for peace and brotherhood.'The Coretta Scott King Award, established in 1970, recognizes the contributions African American authors and illustrators have made to the field of children's literature. This exhibition features some of the most exciting new acquisitions made by the Asian art department over the last couple of years. An endearing 18th-century hanging scroll by renowned painter Ike Taiga (1723-1776) showing pilgrims visiting a nun, and a Korean folk painting of two vigorous carp will be among the works on display. Paintings, sculpture, and ceramics from China, India, and Southeast Asia round out the select group of artworks.
May 1, 2006 - May 7, 2006
'Connoisseurship of Japanese Prints, Part II'. Continuing with the theme of the previous exhibition which explored issues of connoisseurship in Edo period (1615-1868) prints, the current display tackles these questions for from the mid- to late 20th century. Contemporary print artists in Japan often changed their color choices, modified the subject, or altered the printing technique of an image in the middle of a print run resulting in works that look similar but have different details. Prints from the same edition exhibiting these changes will be on display. In addition, several preparatory sketches along with their final printed versions will be shown to further elucidate particular artists' working methods. Featured in the exhibition will be prints by such luminaries as Sekino Junichiro (1914-1988) and Saito Kiyoshi (1907-1997), along with less familiar artists such as Kinoshita Tomio (b. 1923) and Inagaki Tomoo (1902-1980).
May 1, 2006 - June 19, 2006
'Great American Drawings'. Featured in this gallery are 20 of the most signature works on paper in the Art Institute's collection, by American artists who worked in the 20th century. The selected works were chosen to illuminate key moments of aesthetic transition, from Everett Shinn's crusty visualization of Paris at the turn of the last century to Andy Warhol's glib portrayal of fashion icon Halston.
May 1, 2006 - June 11, 2006
'The Concerned Photographer'. 'The concerned photographer finds much in the present unacceptable which he tries to alter. Our goal is simply to let the world also know why it is unacceptable.' Cornell Capa (b. 1918), photographer. Drawn entirely from the collection of the Art Institute, 'The Concerned Photographer' considers how socially motivated and widely circulated photographs are intended to move, inspire, and impact their viewers. This exhibition showcases work by Margaret Bourke-White, Bruce Davidson, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, Susan Meiselas, and Sebastio Salgado, among others. Together, these photographers confronted issues ranging from child labor to the Great Depression, from the Civil Rights movement to gold mining.
111 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago IL
312-443-3600, email accessible from website
  http://www.artic.edu
Mon-Wed, Fri 10:30-4:30;Thurs,10:30-8; Sat-Sun,10-5

For a printable version, click HERE

";
